A Rare Herculaneum Porcelain Plate c.1810-15



A Rare Herculaneum Porcelain Plate c.1810-15, the centre printed in black with an oval portrait of Mary Queen of Scots*,surrounded by a finely painted border of birds perched on scrolling leaves flanking tables laden with fruit, alternating with vignettes of sheep, a sleeping dog and a shepherd's hat and crock, gilded rim. Dimensions: 19.6 cm. diam. Condition: some ware in the centre.

* The same print appears on a creamware plaque, impressed HERCULANEUM , illustrated in "Liverpool Herculaneum Pottery" by Alan Smith plate 77.78.The source print was published by Thomas Cadell, Strand, 1 January 1788, after a painting by Zucchiro.
